Boycott Bush
"The
American public can register their opinions at the ballot box, but for
the rest of the world, all we can do is register our opinions via the
marketplace." This website was established on April 12th 2001 by Ethical Consumer magazine, following the rejection by President Bush of the Kyoto Agreement on global warming. Since that date, he has gone on to offend many more people around the world by his illegal invasion of Iraq and other regressive steps such as opposing weapons proliferation treaties. The Bush Administration is perhaps best understood as a mouthpiece of America's profit-seeking corporate sector, and these links have been extensively charted elsewhere. Although his government acts as if it is unconcerned by opposition from global public opinion, the companies funding Bush and his Republican Party are not in quite the same position. Many have high profile consumer brands which will be vulnerable to pressure group activity. In this website we call on consumers who oppose any or all of Bush's activities to boycott the brands of these companies until they undertake to cease all political funding of the current administration. We go on to help consumers identify the products of companies giving the most money to this most misguided of governments. It is important that any consumers joining this campaign inform the companies concerned of their reasons for avoiding particular products. We have therefore provided a standard letter and contact details. Since the launch of this website, some of the companies have expressed concern about their appearance in our boycott lists. This would appear to be an indicator that the pressure is beginning to bite. Of course there are a number of other campaigns addressing the behaviour of this administration, and we have listed those we know of in our links section. Perhaps the most important of these campaigns is the StopEsso campaign, which we urge readers to support. |
